How to Build an Igloo with Snow

Snow Days are great! No school for the kids and we get to play! This was our first attempt at building an igloo... not precisely the dome of St. Peter's but hey it was great fun!

So how do you get started?  First off, do yourself a favor and download the instructions from this site:
http://www.igloo4you.com/   The pdf manual is only a couple of dollars and it will save you a lot of the guessing and trying.

This is not the Inuit way of building an igloo with ice blocks, etc. just a very simple and easy way to build an igloo with a little snow with the kids.

Here are a few pics as we went along.  It took us about 3 hours from beginning to end:

First you need to enlist all your helpers:
Anyone that can carry snow will do...

Setting up the circular base, leaving sufficient space for the entrance of the igloo, start working your way up and around, try to pack the snow as much as you can.

Then start working towards the inside to shape the dome

Work the side walls at the entrance that will help support the rest of the dome:

And from the outside start closing the dome from the top to the side of the entrance walls...
Ok, now make some nice hot cocoa and enjoy!

And finally,  spray it with a light mist of water if you're expecting temperatures to drop to freezing point overnight.  It will harden your Igloo and make it virtually bomb-proof!
